Inspiring Ted Talks For Your Property Career

If it’s motivation you’re after for your property career then there are some great minds out there who can inspire us to push ourselves harder, go further and succeed faster, even by making just the smallest, most simple changes to our approach. Here is a selection of great TED talks that we think may just inspire you to make some positive changes and advances in your career over the next twelve months.

Forget The Pecking Order At Work By Margaret Heffernan

Margaret Heffernan is the former CEO of five businesses, who explores the all-too-human thought patterns such as conflict avoidance and selective blindness that lead organisations and managers astray.

In this ted talk she explains something called “The Superchicken Model,” where all too often the value is placed on star employees who outperform others and yet, surprisingly, this isn’t what drives the most high-achieving teams. Margaret believes that those team members who support each other, ask for help and have greater social cohesion (than those who are purely out to ‘win’) are what lead to greater results over time.

Moral of the Story: It really does pay to be a nice guy. Finally!

How To Make Stress Your Friend By Kelly McGonigal

Kelly McGonigal translates academic research into practical strategies for health, happiness and personal success.

In this talk Kelly explains how stress only has to be your number one enemy if you let it be. She explains how to turn stress into a positive and, like Margaret above, champions reaching out to others as one of the best antidotes to stress there is.

Moral of the Story: There really is no point pulling your hair out. It will only make you bald and probably more stressed!

The Power Of Passion And Perseverance By Angela Lee Duckworth

Angela Lee Duckworth studies intangible concepts such as self-control and grit to determine how they might predict both academic and professional success.

In this talk she covers how high grades on paper don’t always translate to success in the boardroom. As a 7th grade maths teacher, she experienced that a high IQ wasn’t the only thing separating the successful students from those who struggled. It was determination and grit.

Moral of the Story: You don’t have to be Einstein to succeed in life.

Embrace The Near Win By Sarah Lewis

Art historian and critic Sarah Lewis celebrates creativity and shows how it can lead us through fear and failure to ultimate success

In this talk she explains that the almost-failures, and the near wins, needn’t always be viewed as a bad reflection on our achievements. Conversely, she proposes that it is actually our near wins that push us forward to succeed and that learning from our mistakes is an invaluable lesson not to be overlooked.

Moral of the Story: Who said there were no prizes for second place?

Why You Will Fail To Have A Great Career By Larry Smith

A professor of economics at the University of Waterloo in Canada, Larry Smith coaches his students to find the careers that they will truly love.

In this funny and blunt talk, Larry Smith highlights all the absurd excuses people invent when they fail to pursue their passions. A hard-hitting, but humorous, talk that will force you to question what’s really holding you back.

Moral of the Story: If you love the life you live, you will live a life you love.

Got A Meeting? Talk A Walk By Nilofer Merchant

Business innovator Nilofer Merchant thinks deeply about the frameworks, strategies and cultural values of companies.

In this talk she suggests how going for ‘walking meetings’ can not only unleash your creativity but contribute to a healthier body and mind.

Moral of the Story: You don’t have to be chained to your desk to be productive.

The Happy Secret To Better Work By Shawn Anchor

Shawn Anchor is the CEO of Good Think Inc., where he researches and teaches about positive psychology.

In this fast-moving and very funny talk, Shawn challenges the convention that we need to work hard in order to be happy. Flipping the theory on its head, he explains how the happier employees are, the more productive they become, therefore taking us where we want to be with a smile on our faces.

Moral of the Story: Smile like it’s a Friday, every day of the week.
