Joe's Buddy Line: Mental Health Services for Young People

Back to insights

On the 23rd of May, we are hosting a charity football match ‘Kick-off for Kindness’ at the iconic Craven Cottage, home to Fulham Football Club.

We are doing this in the hopes of raising £5000 for Joe’s Buddy Line an incredible cause supporting the mental health of young people through initiatives at schools, colleges and universities.

Mental health does not wait, and they take a proactive approach to ensure that young people have the tools they need to support their mental health and well-being before it escalates.

Ahead of our event, we wanted to provide you with a bit more information about the charity, and how your donations can support them.

About Joe…

Joe’s Buddy Line was set up in the legacy of Joe Lyons, a caring son, brother, friend and talented Radio Producer who, sadly at the age of just 31 lost his life to suicide. Since then his Sister, Louisa Lyons and Father, Ivan Lyons have carried on his selflessness and commitment to helping others, by ensuring that others do not feel alone when it comes to their mental health. Starting with students.

Below are a few examples of their valuable initiatives that the donations we raise will help get more of these in schools.

The mental health initiatives

The Buddy Board

The Buddy Board was designed for placement in school classrooms, aiming to foster discussions about mental health. The illuminated Lightbox provides valuable information about managing different emotions and seeking assistance when necessary, ensuring students have access to crucial information on navigating their mental well-being.

The Buddy Bench

Buddy benches serve as designated spots in schools where students can comfortably engage in conversations about their emotions with peers. Engraved with phrases promoting supportive buddy concepts, these benches are designed to ignite dialogue and provide a space for students to connect and spend time together beyond the confines of the classroom.

The Buddy Box

This is a small, confidential box that is placed within the schools so that students can share notes they may be hesitant to discuss in person. Supervised by trained wellbeing staff, the box allows for careful monitoring of the messages, ensuring appropriate action is taken when needed.

All of the above initiatives take steps to prevent, and not react to the mental health and wellbeing of young people.

As mental health concerns persist, it's imperative to take proactive steps, and Joe's Buddy Line stands as a beacon, equipping young people with vital tools for maintaining their well-being. Your contributions to this noble cause can pave the way for brighter, healthier futures for countless individuals.

Thank you for joining us in this meaningful endeavour, and let's kick off for kindness together.
